Career Discovery Course: Discover and Design Your Career Path

Feeling lost and confused about what to do with your life is common. Whether you’re 20 or 50, it happens. And it feels terrible.

Of course, having the problem of searching for a career that not only pays the bills but that you also enjoy is a good problem to have. Most people around the world today and most generations before us didn’t have that luxury. But that doesn’t make you feel much better when you’re lost and confused.

I’ve made every career mistake possible. But in the end, I found my way. Yes, some of it was luck. I started from a place of education and security. But I also worked hard, took advantage of the opportunities that arose, and made my own opportunities. And, after only 15 years of anxiety, stress, and career confusion, I finally had a few things figured out.

The fact is that if you’re willing to work hard, persist, and learn as you go, you’ll find your way. It may happen quickly. It may take 15 years. But it will happen. Let’s try to shorten the path as much as possible.

I put together this course to try to pass on the lessons from my many mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones and so you figure out your path in much less than 15 years.

I also put together this course because when I was lost and confused in my career, I had no idea what to do. I was ready to do whatever it took to figure it out, but I didn’t know the steps. I needed an action plan.

This Career Discovery Course is an action-based, evidence-based system that guides you through the process of figuring out what you want to do with your life, no matter what stage you’re at in your career.

This course is meant to be done as a group but can also be self-directed. If you’re interested in joining a career discovery group, let me know. If you’d like to work on it alone, then go get it!

Course Summary

1. This course is action-based.

This Career Discovery course is a specific action plan, with projects to do. You won’t be sitting around thinking. You’ll be doing:

  • Tasks and projects to help you get to know yourself better
  • Tasks and projects to help you learn what careers are out there and what career paths other people have followed
  • Tasks and projects to help you figure out how to align who you are with the potential career paths

2. This course is evidence-based.

This Career Discovery course uses evidence from your past experiences and from external sources to help you figure out what path makes sense for you. This isn’t you sitting around guessing at what you think you’d enjoy doing based on your feelings. The evidence-based approach makes the process and results much more reliable.

3. This course will build your career toolkit.

While working through the Career Discovery process, you’ll also incidentally build your three most valuable professional tools: your network, your knowledge, and your resume.

4. The Career Matrix

The Career Matrix is the framework for the Career Discovery Course. The Career Matrix defines your career path and preferences (and your career anti-paths and anti-preferences).

The main goal of this course is for you to design your own Career Matrix. Each project you do will be focused on developing and iterating on your Career Matrix. That’s the manifestation of all the work you do.

That’s the summary. Here’s the full Career Discovery Course outline.
